Haley lived a life defined by brilliance, devotion, humor, and an extraordinary heart for others. She was vibrant and radiated joy to all around her.
A proud Trojan, Haley graduated from the University of Southern California (2011-2015) Summa Cum Laude as a Renaissance Scholar, and continued her education at USC’s Keck School of Medicine (2015-2019), completing her Orthopaedic Surgery Residency at LAC+USC Medical Center where she served as Chief Resident her final year. Then she matched at The Duke Orthopaedic Hand, Upper Extremity, and Microvascular Surgery Fellowship (2024-2025). She then landed her dream job as a hand surgeon at Vanderbilt University (2025-2026) she she planned to care for patients and train the next generation of hand surgeons.
But Haley’s greatest accomplishment was not found on her CV; it was found in the way she made people feel. She was, above all else, a daughter, sister, wife, aunt, and the most devoted friend. She had 15 bridesmaids at her wedding, a testament to the way she showed up for others - always responsive and always supportive, no matter what she had going on in her own life, personally or professionally. Her curiosity was constant and contagious, and she cared deeply for her country and the world. She was proud of her German and Japanese heritage. She was the biggest champion of others, especially the people she loved.
Haley’s life was marked by excellence, loyalty, humor, and an unwavering commitment to the people she loved. She was extraordinary, not only for what she accomplished, but for who she was to everyone around her.
The Haley Nakata Foundation is being established to honor Haley’s legacy and unwavering commitment to helping others. The Foundation will, among other things, expand access to early cancer screenings and genetic testing.
In her honor, USC is naming a scholarship in Haley's name for a Junior Resident who exemplifies hard work and going above and beyond. At Duke, they have a named position entitled the Duke Hand Society Haley Nakata Visiting Professorship and they will work and instruct the Hand Surgery Fellows in the program.
