About M:
I needed to find cards to send to my girlfriend because I couldn’t be there with her through her treatments. I wanted cards that said things that were funny, dear, uplifting, without cliché phrases, famous quotes or breast cancer ribbons (pink ribbons are great, don’t get me wrong, but I think they’re there for fundraising not hugging my friend.)
I needed to find cards that express with humor, sincerity, vulnerability, what others don’t.
This is real and it can be ugly and terrifying. And those feelings need to be expressed. Words need to be found .. and shared.
And while it can be hard there can also be real moments, life-changing moments, that include great love and bonding and self discovery and untapped strength appearing out of nowhere. And those feelings need to be expressed too. Those words need to be found .. and shared too.
So I’ve created four different lines of cards that serve four very different groups of people:
The 1st, of course, are the cards FOR the Patient. We call this line, “From the Well-Wishers”
The 2nd, are the cards FROM the Patient, aptly called, “From the Patient”
The 3rd, are the cards to celebrate every MILESTONE and ANNIVERSARY. We call this line, “Celebrating Milestones & Anniversaries”
The 4th, are the FUNDRAISING cards: if you’re willing to fundraise for a cure, we’re willing to help you.* We call this line, “For Fundraising & Events”
It was my great fortune to meet and now collaborate with a very talented writer and designer who has helped to broaden the designs beyond my own limited original vision, who pushes me to create “better”, find just the right line to get to the right tone, to craft quickly yet stylistically .. and always doing this with her heart. I wish you could meet her. She’s who has made this creative mission a pleasure for me, inspiring me to write for all of us who want to find .. the right words.
Words have always held a special place in my heart so when M first approached me about working with her as a part of Dear Sherry, I was overwhelmed with gratitude at the idea of being able to help others find a way to connect their hearts to their loved one’s .. using words that matched their emotions, their thoughts, and their deep truths.
In that often surprising way life works, my girlfriend, Maria, also got breast cancer and I - also - struggled to find cards that would do what I wanted them to do; to move emotional mountains, to provide mental support, to make her laugh, to improve her spirits, and mostly, to remind her that she has her friend by her side forever.
Finding the right words are like finding a piece of magic that we can give to others. We grab that card and say, “This is it, this is the one, this is what I want to say!”
Especially when we can’t be there in person to just give them a hug.
Words are sometimes all we have to offer when distance is too far.
Dear Sherry is more than just a card company to me: it’s a movement towards empathy and expressing those unspeakably tough words on that unspeakably tough subject, done with love .. for the ones we love.
