About M:

I needed to find cards to send to my girlfriends when I couldn’t be there with them throughout their many months of treatment.

I looked for cards that said things that were uplifting, without clichéd phrases,

famous quotes or breast cancer ribbons.

(Pink ribbons are great, don’t get me wrong, but I think they’re better for fundraising, not hugging a friend.)

This is real and it can be ugly and terrifying. And sometimes those feelings need to be expressed. Those words need to be found .. and shared. But there are also those amazing real, life-changing moments, that include love and bonding and self discovery, and untapped strength appearing out of nowhere.

And those feelings need to be expressed too. Those words need to be found .. and shared too.

Fortunately medicines and protocols have changed a lot. While survival is becoming more common, the process is still a difficult one, physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Which is why hearing from friends & family during this time can be the boost

desperately needed at the right time.

Here I created a Cancer Card line for ALL the people involved in the care and healing of our Patient.

Here are 5 distinct card lines:

  • FOR the Patient - from her* well-wishers

  • FROM the Patient - thanking the helpers in her life

  • FOR the Patient - celebrating each Milestone & Anniversary (because every milestone is worth celebrating)

  • FOR Fundraising - if you’re willing to fundraise for a cure, we’re willing to help you

  • and our newest line: The Haley Collection - our own way of Advocating for Breast Cancer Detection EARLY , created in honor of Dr. Haley Nakata. A line of cards for all of us to spread the word.

My background includes professional writing with my greatest joy being collaboration with other like-hearted/like-minded writers. I was lucky to find this with a lovely, talented writer and designer who helped me broaden my designs and voice beyond my original vision. She’s made this creative mission a pleasure for me, inspiring me to write for all of us who want to find .. the right words.

* We use the pronoun “Her” though we know that men can get breast cancer too.

Words have always held a special place in my heart so when M first approached me about working with her as a part of Dear Sherry, I was overwhelmed with gratitude at the idea of being able to help others find a way to connect their hearts to their loved one’s .. using words that matched their emotions, their thoughts, and their deep truths.

In that often surprising way life works, my girlfriend, Maria, also got breast cancer and I - also - struggled to find cards that would do what I wanted them to do; to move emotional mountains, to provide mental support, to make her laugh, to improve her spirits, and mostly, to remind her that she has her friend by her side forever.

Finding the right words are like finding a piece of magic that we can give to others.  We grab that card and say, “This is it, this is the one, this is what I want to say!”

Especially when we can’t be there in person to just give them a hug.

Words are sometimes all we have to offer when distance is too far.

Dear Sherry is more than just a card company to me: it’s a movement towards empathy and expressing those unspeakably tough words on that unspeakably tough subject, done with love .. for the ones we love.

OUR GOAL : to provide cards that give a voice to the patient, open up communication, and support (her) with love and humor.
